For as long as I
can remember, I wanted to dive. I'm of the generation raised on Sea
Hunt and Jacques Cousteau. From fourth grade through high school, I read
every diving book in the school library. One of the more memorable was
We Come from the Sea, biologist Hans
Hass’ study of the Great Barrier Reef.
When I received my open water SCUBA certification, I was spellbound by the beauty and
diversity of the first tropical reefs I visited. I wanted to capture that beauty
for my own enjoyment and for the enjoyment of those who cannot visit the reef
for themselves. The transition from diver to underwater photographer was inevitable.
For years I lived on the
Southeast Florida coast where my wife Lynn and I, along
with our good friend Mark, studied and photographed the reefs and wrecks
from West Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale. We did most of our diving on a
stunning reef line from Boynton Beach south to Delray Beach. We also frequented the
Upper Florida Keys, with its famous wrecks and pristine reefs.
We have made several trips to “blue water” destinations. Those trips
have taken us to locations in the Bahamas including
the alluring blue holes at the Cay Sal Bank, the Exuma Cays, and the
Northwest Bahamas area that includes Cat Cay, Port Lucaya and Bimini. We
have also visited the Cayman Islands and the spectacular Bloody Bay
Wall. In April, 2007, Mark and I spent a week diving on the famous
“Nuclear Fleet,” at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
The photographs you'll see here are from
those locations.
